A veces es sorprendente el valor que puede tener una sonrisa. Es que vas por la calle. Metido en tus cosas. Mucha gente en muchas direcciones, para aquí para allá. Tú en tu bici,y estás deseando llegar a casa, es un día duro y estás cansado.

De repente te encuentras a alguien que te sonrie, lo piensas un momento. Pero quien me ha sonreido y porqué. Y acabas a renglon seguido pensando: “Me acaba de sonreir un subsahariano que vende pañuelos”. Yo me considero una persona alegre. Ante la espontaneidad de esa sonrisa que me sorprende, en un mundo donde la gente es demasiado gris, me paro. Él me dirige la palabra en un español fluído, con un acento africano que se disimula bien. Es un tipo que habla bastante en español, pienso.

Y me dice: ¡hola, amigo!, dos palabras simples que me comunican de lleno, en torrente, toda la alegría que lleva dentro. Y le pregunto ¿qué tal el día?, “mal” responde, sin perder la sonrisa, “no vendo nada, no dinero para comer, y mañana qué”. Se me acerca y yo mirándole le digo con gestos que no llevo nada. Se pone en verde para peatones , cruzo me despido, y él sigue intentando vender a la gente con una amplia sonrisa.

Yo recojo mi bici y marcho a casa. De camino me encuentro a otro vendedor. Lleva una sonrisa no menos amplia que la del anterior. En sus manos tintinean un par de monedas. Ha vendido todos los pañuelos y vuelve a “casa”. Ha tenido más suerte.

Me sorprende como gente, que no tiene nada, es capaz de ser feliz y sonreír, y sin embargo hay mucha gente que daría la mitad de su fortuna para “comprar” la felicidad.

En esta película intervienen muchos personajes, el principal llamémoslo Brown, Gordon Brown. Como a todos los jefes, no le gusta que le contradigan y si le molesta en lo pequeño no digamos en lo grande. Y qué hay más grande para él que su proyecto estrella, su “avance”, su reforma para permitir investigar con embriones. Eso sí, matando muchos niños para conseguir poco de momento.

Ante esta barbaridad hay tres valientes que se oponen, que se niegan, que piensan que para ser un buen laborista no es necesario matar embriones, y como católicos y humanos que son defienden los derechos del embrión. En consecuencia, dirán no. Y muy probablamente votarán en contra. Usted, querido lector, desde su sillón sentados cómodamente, quizás no se imaginen las repercusiones que les va a traer esta decisión. Probablemente pierdan su puesto. Estos tres valientes son personajes importantes en el gabinete de Brown, de su confianza pero que no se amilanan ni van a lo “políticamente correcto”. Concretamente: Ruth Kelly, ministra de transportes, Paul Murphy, ministro para Gales y Des Browne, ministro de Defensa.

Además según el Daily Telegraph, 23 diputados laboristas se abstendrían, 18 para el Daily Mail.

 Se ve como aún quedan “héroes” sobre la tierra. Un fuerte aplauso para ellos.
